About Us
Overview
Destiny Ranch is a non-profit program focused on assisting disadvantaged youth.
The mission of the ranch is to provide a safe, caring and empowering environment to youth that need to learn to love themselves and others. Our goal is to provide a self-esteem building program to emancipated youth between the ages of 16-21 who need an opportunity to make a positive change in their lives and for them to recognize and reach their full potential.
Destiny Ranch expands over a breathtaking 80 acres with ponds, vineyards, and many domestic animals. Through active participation in ranching, farming, animal husbandry, schooling, and hard work our at-risk youth will develop a new sense of self-worth while learning practical life skills. By creating a positive support network and opportunities, this program will assist our youth with successful transition into adulthood.
Academics
The academics component of the Program is a major focus for the youth. Each student will receive an Individual Learning Plan that will identify their specific learning needs. The student curriculum will be provided by an accredited Independent Study Program. Each student will receive individual attention and to learn at their own pace.
Destiny Ranch offers a full academic curriculum for grades 7-12 through:
Increased School Hours
Credit Recovery
Educational Counselors
Pre and Post Academic Testing
Full-time Certified Teachers
Equine Therapy
Equine Assisted Therapy is more than learning to ride a horse and cleaning up stalls. It provides our youth an opportunity to learn about themselves and how they react to others. Students gain even more in group discussions where they draw parallels from working with horses to their own feelings, behaviors, and patterns. While most youth may perceive the horse interaction as just having fun, working with horses also helps students develop communication, leadership, teamwork, assertiveness, and problem solving skills. When students work with horses, feedback is immediate. Confidence and self-esteem grow as students internalize the powerful parallels they carry away.
Agricultural
We have an onsite organic garden that the youth will be providing care for. In addition, we are in the process of preparing the land for harvesting our own hay and seasonal vegetation. By doing so, this will provide sustainability for food for the animals as well the youth. Also, this will provide an opportunity for the youth to open a fruit and vegetable stand, which will generate income and reward their efforts. As the teens nurture the garden and crops, they begin to understand the hardships of caring for something other than themselves. The responsibility of caring for a living thing encourages empathy, personal growth, respect for others and self, and leadership skills.
Clinical
The ranch uses a team approach in working with the residents and we believe this is the absolute core to introducing change. The entire staff are carefully selected and screened professionally and they bring their leadership skills, compassion for children and expertise. With a collaborative problem solving method, a multi-disciplinary team meets each week to review each students progress. The team consists of residential staff, teachers, management, and the residents primary therapist. The staff considers it their privilege and calling to work with this population therefore, they are committed and passionately interested in each individual.

Statistics
Sacramento, California's youth crime rate increased by 36.3 percent in 2006 (Yearly Crime Statistics). There are a number of contributing factors considered when looking at why crime among youth has increased. These factors include lifestyles involving gangs and /or drugs, youth and young adult populations, truancy, and many others. Measures taken to lessen youth crime in the city resulted in a decrease in robberies and aggravated assault among youth in 2007. This demonstrates that intervention is key.
Violence continues to be the leading cause of death for 15-24 year olds in California. In addition, California leads the nation in confining juveniles (549 per 100,000 youth) and books more than 10,000 youth per day into the juvenile system. According to the committee on Econimic Development, more than one million youth who fail to graduate high school each year will be marginally illiterate and virtually unemployable.
The United States Surgeon General has determined that violence intervention and prevention programs are effective. Removing youth from their current negative or violence-filled environment, and placing them in a supportive, self-eseteem building atmosphere, is successful in improving their sense of self and character.
The Conditions that underlie violent acts cut across all age, income, racial, and ethnic groups. This is evident in the increasing reports of random acts of violence, hate crimes, kids killing kids, adults abusing children, human trafficing, and domestic violence. The data shows that children who are exposed to any form of family violence commonly run away. They expose themselves to even greater violdence and open the door to the dangers of drugs, gangs, sexual exploitation, sexual exploitation and econoic deprivation. These children are at greater risk of contiing the cycle as perpetrators or victims of violence.
We believe it is time to take responsibility for their futures out of the hands of the streets and put it where it belongs: in the hands of people who care enough to give them a second chance - people like you. By giving youth Christian guidance and instiling values of honesty, respect, teamwork, and accountability, Destiny Ranch offers a path for each precious individiual to reach peak potential and a greater quality of life. With your help, Destiny Ranch can make a difference.
